A regular story disappears after 24 hours. A highlight is a story the account saved permanently to its profile, grouped into a named collection that anyone can revisit.

Will the account owner know I viewed their story?

No, and the reason is worth understanding. When you open a story inside the Instagram app you are signed in, so Instagram attaches your account to that view and adds your username to the owner's viewer list. InstaSPY works differently: our server requests the publicly available story on your behalf, so the request that reaches Instagram carries no Instagram session of yours — because you never logged in, there is no account to attach. The viewer list Instagram shows an account owner only counts views tied to signed-in Instagram accounts, so a server-side fetch has nothing to record there. Your username, your device, and your IP address never reach the account owner, and refreshing the viewer list will not surface you later.

Is it legal to view Instagram stories anonymously?

For public accounts, yes. Instagram's own Terms of Use describe content on a public profile as visible to anyone on the open internet, so loading it without logging in is the same act as visiting the profile in a browser. US courts have repeatedly held that accessing publicly available web content is not unauthorised access under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act — the leading case is hiQ Labs v. LinkedIn (2022). InstaSPY never bypasses Instagram's authentication, never touches private accounts, and never asks for your credentials. What you do with what you see is a separate question: personal viewing is fine, while republishing someone else's copyrighted media without permission, harassment, or stalking are wrong regardless of the tool used.

Can I view stories from a private Instagram account?

No, and we will not pretend otherwise. A private account only shows its stories to followers it has approved, and that check happens on Instagram's servers before any content is released. No third-party viewer can get around it — not InstaSPY and not any tool promising private access. If a site claims it can show you private stories, the realistic outcomes are that it asks for your Instagram password (which puts your own account at risk), sends you through a survey or download loop, or simply shows nothing after the countdown. Everything InstaSPY loads is content a logged-out visitor could already reach on a public profile.

Does Instagram notify someone if I screenshot their story?

No. Instagram does not send a notification for screenshots or screen recordings of stories, posts, reels, highlights, or profiles. The single exception is disappearing photos and videos sent inside a direct message as View Once or Allow Replay — screenshotting those does alert the sender. Everything else is silent. That said, screen recording a story is a poor way to keep it: it captures the Instagram interface, re-compresses the video, and often drops audio quality. Saving the original file from the results page keeps the photo as a JPG or the video as an MP4 at the quality Instagram published.

Is the Instagram story viewer list in the order people watched?

No — it is a ranking, not a timeline. For stories with roughly fewer than 50 views the list is approximately reverse-chronological, so the most recent viewer sits near the top. Past that threshold Instagram reorders the list using its own engagement signals, mainly how often you and that account interact through profile visits, likes, and messages. So a name at the top usually means Instagram thinks the two accounts interact a lot, not that the person watched first. No third-party tool can retrieve or reorder that list, and any site claiming to tell you who viewed your own story is guessing.
